Reflection on CPD Showcase

It was an honour for Happy Tree to be selected to represent the class for the CPD showcase. My team includes Cheryl, Swathi, and Tricia and we did our project on "Improving Personalised Service Standards in Singapore Spas" discussing the shortfall in services provided in the spa when compared to Thailand's Spa industry, the benchmark for service excellence.

In all honesty, I hate public speaking as I feel very vulnerable in front of a crowd and I have a fear of blanking out when I feel anxious. With that, it did not help that the entire cohort, professors and industry partners were around, it was definitely the biggest crowd I have ever spoken in front of. Before the presentation, I was trying my best to remember all my points and to deliver it smoothly and calmly. As the second speaker, I introduced the objective of our presentation and explained why we wanted to do this topic. Touching on points from our research such as the poor to average service standards in Singapore, the comparison to Thailand's excellent service delivery and why guest interaction is important.

When it was all over, I felt like it all went by so fast that I did not have time to be nervous and I managed to remember all I needed to say. In my opinion, it helped to keep eye contact with familiar faces as well as the judges individually as compared to looking at the crowd as a whole. I am happy to say that I did not say "pass on" when I was introducing Swathi as the next speaker.

All in all, I truly feel like the four of us did our best and I'm proud of my team for winning second place. It came as a surprise to the four of us as the competition was tough and many of the groups had great topics too and even funnier videos. But then again, I remember Brad advising us against prioritising humour over content and I'm glad that we had a balance as, in the end, this was meant to be a training video on tackling service issues in the hospitality industry.

I am thankful for the experience to represent our class in this showcase and the guidance from Brad on our project. CPD II was an insightful module and it was placed in a timely manner right before we leave for IWSP. I am glad for the experience and I hope to use all that I learned in this module for my internship in the next 8 months.
